Police in Utah rescued a 23-year-old woman taken against her will from Manhattan to Salt Lake City after she was reportedly forced into prostitution by her kidnappers.
Woman kidnapped near Port Authority Bus Terminal rescued in Utah
The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that the woman was abducted near the Port Authority Bus Terminal during the Super Bowl after Jean Joseph, 26, allegedly struck her repeatedly and knocked her out.
“She’s been held in captivity this whole time and isn’t quite sure how much time has gone by,” Sgt. Robin Heiden of the St. Lake City Police Department told television station Fox 13. “At some point, she was knocked unconscious and woke up in a different state.”
Joseph and Tara L. Pinnock, 24, were arrested on Monday in connection to the woman’s kidnapping as well as for suspicion of rape, human trafficking and aggravated assault. The AP said neither has been formally charged and are being held ahead of a court date.
Officers reported that the woman said her abductors took her from New York to Chicago to Denver before she was able to use a cell phone to call 911 in Salt Lake City. The woman was forced into prostitution along the way, she said.
Local police told Fox 13 that they were working with the FBI to see if there were any links between the suspects and the victim.
